Electrocardiogram

Learn about the strength and timing of your heart’s electrical signals with an electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) at Montage Health. This painless test can diagnose arrhythmias, or unusual heartbeats.

Where to get an EKG

Montage Health and Tyler Heart Institute offers you two locations on the peninsula to receive an EKG after your doctor has ordered the test:

Location Hours How
Tyler Heart Institute, inside Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Walk-in, after your doctor has ordered your EKG test
Tyler Heart Institute Cardiovascular Test Center, Ryan Ranch Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Walk-in, after your doctor has ordered your EKG test
Cardiopulmonary Wellness, inside Montage Wellness Center, Marina Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. By appointment only, after your doctor has ordered the test. Please call (831) 883-5660 to make your appointment.

You might also receive an EKG in the emergency room if you’re experiencing heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain

What to expect

A technician (professional who performs your test) will attach soft, sticky patches called electrodes to the skin of your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes detect your heart’s electrical activity from several areas at the same time.

Before placing the electrodes, a nurse or technician may shave your skin to improve electrical contact.

You’ll then lie on a table while a machine connected to the electrodes records your heart’s electrical signals for several minutes.

After EKG testing

After a scheduled EKG appointment, you can return to your normal daily activities right away.

If your EKG happens in the emergency room, your care team will tell you what to do next.

Getting test results

If you have an online MyChart account, you’ll likely see your test results in the patient portal within 24 hours. Your doctor will call to explain them and discuss next steps. Wait until you talk to your doctor before trying to understand what they mean.
